"If the individual symbolized is killed or dies while serving, from causes other than dishonorable, the star representing that individual will have superimposed thereon a gold star of smaller size so that the blue forms a border. On flags displaying multiple stars, including gold stars, when the flags are suspended, as against a wall, the gold star(s) will be to the right* of, or above the blue star(s)."...DoD Regulations.

This is a very delicate and heartrending subject to broach, but some immediate family members or organizations may be eligible to display a "GOLD STAR" Service Flag or Banner.  Gold Star outdoor flags or window banners cost the same as regular Blue Star flags or window banners.  If you are eligible to display a Gold Star Service Flag or Banner please call 412-276-7689 between 9am and 5pm Eastern Time weekdays and I'll instruct you as to how to order.  Although I would prefer you call, you may also send an E-mail that includes the name and branch of service of the deceased: E-mail to rrg@gideonflags.com

(* The flag's own right, which is the viewer's left; or simply put, toward the hoist)

PLEASE READ OUR POLICY CONCERNING GOLD STAR SERVICE FLAGS AND WINDOW BANNERS:  As a licensee of the Department of Defense RRGF has the responsibility to insure that these flags are treated with great respect, and go those people or organizations that are qualified to display them.

  • REGULATION GOLD STAR SERVICE FLAGS are authorized to be displayed by the following:
1348.33C10.3.1.1. Members of the Immediate Family. Includes wife, husband, mother, father, stepmother, stepfather, parent through adoption, foster parents who stand or stood in loco parentis, children, stepchildren, children through adoption, brothers, sisters, half brothers, and half sisters of a member of the Armed Forces of the United States

GRANDPARENTS: TIOH has advised us that the "immediate family" definition may be extended to include grandparents, and that they are authorized to display a Service flag or button

1348.33C10.3.1.2. Organization. Includes those group organizations such as churches, schools, colleges, fraternities, sororities, societies, and places of business with which the member of the Armed Forces of the United States was or is associated

  • THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE SUPPLIES MANUFACTURERS PATTERNS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE FABRICATION OF GOLD STAR FLAGS.  Those patterns DO NOT include names or the service

  • When we get a request for a GOLD STAR Service Flag we check with the DoD to confirm the death.  We do this with dignity and respect - it is not necessary for the family or organization to supply us with anything other than the name(s) of the service man or woman

  • A death does not have to be combat related or confined to either Iraq or Afghanistan.  The military person must have died while in active service, and during the current national emergency (war on terror)

  • We do not make these flags for general use, for W.W.II. or other veterans who have died, or for commercial purposes (see below)

  • Some organizations and companies supply GOLD STAR window banners free of charge - check with your local veterans organization, or contact www.serviceflags.com.  RRGF does not supply these items for free.  (We caution anyone opting for a free GOLD STAR window banner to ask for the country of origin of the flag)

  • Our GOLD STAR window banners and full-sized flags are always made in the United States, using U.S. materials, by American citizens.  Each flag is hand-crafted.  The typical 32x60 inch Nylon GOLD STAR Service Flag takes over four hours to build.  On full-size flags we match thread color to fabric.  All flags are guaranteed to meet Department of Defense regulations concerning proportion.  RRGF prides itself in making these flags so that the field dimensions vary  +/- 1.5% or less from ideal

  • DoD regulations call for the GOLD STAR to be appliquéd over the existing blue star so as to leave a blue border around the GOLD STAR.  As written this regulation assumes one is modifying an existing blue star flag.  For new GOLD STAR flags the blue star is unnecessary; however, since the regulations call for a blue trim around the gold star we finish our new GOLD STAR flags with a blue border, thus meeting the requirements

  • We understand that the reason for requesting a GOLD STAR flag is an emotional one.  But we've been around this type of situation before - RRGF is owned and operated by a Vietnam Era Veteran

  • If you or your organization are eligible to display a Gold Star Service Flag or Banner please call 412-276-7689 between 9am and 5pm Eastern Time weekdays, and I'll instruct you as to how to order.  You may also send an E-mail that includes the name and branch of service of the deceased: E-mail to rrg@gideonflags.com.

  • You may purchase a GOLD STAR window banner or full-sized flag as a GIFT to a qualified family.  When you contact RRGF please mention this, and supply the name of the soldier who died

PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR A SERVICE FLAG FOR A VETERAN There are other devices and ways to honor those brave men and women.  The Service Flag is for the here and now.  Let's not dilute the meaning of the Service Flag.  For appropriate flags and other devices to honor veterans see WWW.FLAGGUYS.COM
