PRICING ON CUSTOM MADE FLAGS

This section is here to explain our pricing policy on custom made flags.  Custom made flags encompass those flags we make for museums, reenactors, the movies, businesses, or private individuals looking for something special.  As an example, we make a lot of Civil War era reproductions, such as Union Regimentals or Confederate Battle Flags.  Fifty-star US flags are NOT custom made - we purchase them from a large distributor - and therefore we can state their selling price.

Most custom flags shown on this web site do not have a list price.  This is because each custom made flag is commissioned on an individual basis.  The same flag pattern may be sold for vastly different prices, depending upon factors stated by the customer, amongst which are:

• Material, such as silk, wool, cotton, Nylon, Polyester, or a blended fabric
• Complexity of artwork
• Type of artwork (i.e., painted, appliquéd, embroidered, etc.)

In a few cases we can advertise the price of a custom made flag.  An example is a Service Flag.  All of our Service Flags are made on order (custom), but the price is stated on the order form.  However, for most of our custom work we won't know the final price until we know what you, the customer, desire as a final product.

• Custom-made flags are usually not cheap because they involve many production steps and possibly more than one person.  You are paying for materials and labor.  A big flag company makes thousands of flags of a given pattern, and the economy of scale kicks in.  Consequently you can buy a 50 star US flag at the local discount store for $9.  
• DO NOT buy an expensive flag unless you intend to take care of it.  Buying a museum quality flag to take to a reenactment is lunacy.  In most cases the public will not be able to tell the difference between a silk flag and a polyester flag, particularly at a distance.
• When you buy a custom made flag you will become part of the construction process.  We will update you as to the progress, and ask you to approve what you see.
• Be advised that color acuity depends on many factors.  Do you want the flag's color to be as it is now or as it was then?  Are you judging color by a photograph in a book? - be careful!  If you see the actual flag you may be shocked at the difference.  And even if you see the real thing, did you see it in natural light or fluorescent light - again, there is a big difference.
• Are you going to frame the flag?  If so, consider a single-sided reproduction.  It costs less, and why have the back painted if no one will ever see it?
• Patience is a virtue!  Custom made flags may take quite some time to fabricate.  This is due to the fact that fabric suppliers may have to custom-weave material, some materials may have to be imported, and some materials may have to be concocted from scratch.  We are at the mercy of suppliers, and because we do not buy hundreds of yards of fabric at a time they often put us at the end of their priority list.  Also, we have a lot of people in the cue, and we deal first-come, first-served.
